A few weeks ago, the Water Quality Control Commission voted to reopen a rulemaking process on how to handle radioactive fracking waste in New Mexico. This came right after the Commission had already spent nearly two years, with extensive public and scientific input, crafting and approving the current rule which prevents the waste from being used in New Mexico. But just days after that rule went into effect, a reshuffled set of commissioners replaced those who had voted it prohibited, and they opened a new process to reverse course.
Now, new reporting from the Santa Fe New Mexican reveals improper coordination between Governor MLG's office, Cabinet Secretary for the NM Environment James Kenney, and supposedly independent agencies, to vote in favor of an Oil and Gas Industry alliance looking to offload their fracking waste onto New Mexicans.
In response, community members gathered outside the NM Environment Department offices to demand accountability and call for Secretary Kenney’s resignation. They are circulating a petition which can be found below.
