It’s time for Flyer Decoder!

Often times flyers and poster contain cryptic acronyms, lingo, or instructions that might be unclear or misinterpreted if you're not in the know. This guide is to help you understand what all of that means, and hopefully give you some shorthand tools for your own event flyers.

Flyer Decoder: a guide to what's going on by Julian

What does $15 NOTAFLOF mean?

Isn't a suggested donation just the cover price?

BYO what?

DM for details? What not just post the address?

PLUR?

What are these?

There are so many event flyers that come across your feed of happenings around the state, especially if you're watching for our weekly Action Packs. Often times flyers and poster contain cryptic acronyms, lingo, or instructions that might be unclear or misinterpreted if you're not in the know. This guide is to help you understand what all of that means, and hopefully give you some shorthand tools for your own event flyers.

Let’s Decode these flyers!

NOTAFLOF - No One Turned Away For Lack Of Funds: please pay the full price if you can, but if you've got to choose between supporting a local band and groceries, get your groceries and come to the show.

SD - Suggested Donation: the venue is expecting most folks to pay this, some to pay less and some to pay more. Please donate what you can.

With both NOTAFLOF and Suggested Donation events, it’s great to pay more if you can, to help support those who can’t pay full price.

PLUR - Peace Love Unity Respect: an ideology for rave culture- dance focused but intentionally bringing those concepts to front of mind.

DM - Direct Message: Why do I have to send a direct message or text? There are lots of reasons and almost all relate to safety. It’s not a big hoop to jump through, go ahead and send that message!

BYOB - BRING YOUR OWN: It’s not always B for beer or bottle, sometimes this is the start of the list.

Heads up: If the party isn’t at a bar don't assume that there's alcohol. Check the flyer and if it says “Don’t bring alcohol,” Do. Not. Bring. Alcohol.

Bars and theaters will have different regulations than house parties or multi use spaces.

Don't bring pets to events unless the invite includes them specifically. (If your animal isn’t a registered service animal, they’re your pet.)

Friendly Reminder: don't go out if you're feeling sick, and Masks are always cool.

It's it ok to ask questions? Yes but know that depending on the venue you might be dealing with a volunteer. Comment on a post if possible, other guests might know the answer.

If it's not an event specific question you can always ask your local librarian, or look it up yourself on the internet.

Read signage, follow the rules, and always be a good guest that cleans up after themselves and treats everyone respectfully.

Get out there! Go places!
