The Vote to Pay NM Legislators for their Labor

Did you know that New Mexico is the last state in the union to not have a wage or salary for state legislators? A proposed amendment on this upcoming midterm ballot, Amendment 4, seeks to change that.

J. Alex the Technologist sat down with leaders from Common Cause New Mexico, a non-partisan pro-democracy advocacy organization, to talk about the political accessibility issues caused by having an unpaid "citizen legislature" and the benefits that could come if our elected state representatives are paid a salary (tied to the median NM household income: currently ~$67,000).

If voters pass this amendment, legislators will not begin receiving a salary until the 2029 session.
